Vignette: One Moment in Time Hurricane Dean Luis Aguirre
9/30/09
It was a cloudy morning in Cancun; I woke up hearing the news hoping nothing bad had happened. I heard the news man saying there was going to be a hurricane passing through Cancun. I saw my mom worried and concerned about the hurricane, we didn’t know whether to leave or stay. Thoughts of hurricane Katrina came to my mind.
After a long time of discussing the situation we made the decision to stay. We made our last walk through the beautiful Cancun beach before the hurricane. The employees of the hotel announced that people could stay in their room o go to a more secure room. While walking back to the hotel we saw a little hurricane forming in the pool. We took a photo and went5 to our hotel room. After a while we decided to go to the recommended room they told us about.
We took all our important belongings down to the room. There they put on a Disney movie I think. We went back upstairs out of the room for a reason I can’t remember, but I remember someone opening the door and the air almost throwing me down to the floor, stuff that didn’t really weigh much was already floating in the air like paper, branches, and iguanas.
I went back downstairs to the room. There they served us food from their restaurant. After a while when the movie ended they raised up the projector. It was time to rest. That night I dreamed that the room was filling up with water and it exploded, suddenly everyone was surfing the big hurricane waves. By the time I woke up the hurricane had already moved another direction to Houston, Texas.
My whole family went outside to see the beach, all the sand was gone only rocks. The pools were filled with sand and rocks. The tables were broken into bits, or if not they weren’t there anymore. I saw an iguana on the beach but dead. I think it was the same one I saw flying around. I felt little and weak compared to the powerful big hurricane. Almost everything outside was taken away by the hurricane. This moment changed my life by knowing how powerful everything is compared to you.
